Handover

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 20 September 2026

In short: Handover stores your job list on your own device. It has no accounts, no cloud sync, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing you type for jobs is ever sent to us, except when you choose to hand over jobs to a colleague by showing a QR code or sharing a link, or when you optionally send feedback.

Who this policy is from

Handover ("the app") is a personal, non-commercial project by Dr Khalid Shamiyah. Because the app never receives or stores your data on any server, we do not act as a data controller of the information you enter: it stays under your control on your device. For any question about this policy you can contact khalid@drshamiyah.com.

What the app stores, and where

All data you enter is saved only in your device's local browser/app storage (localStorage). It never leaves your device unless you actively share a handover. This includes:

What we collect

By default, nothing. Day-to-day use does not send your job list, profile or notes to us. There are no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no cookies and no third-party trackers that gather usage data.

Optional feedback. If you use Send feedback in the app, the message you type (and an email address only if you choose to include one), plus app version and platform, are submitted via Formspree so we can read them. Your job list, wards, bed notes and profile are not included unless you type them into the message yourself. Do not put patient-identifiable information in feedback.

Handing over (QR codes and links)

When you hand over, you choose which jobs to pass on. Those selected jobs, together with their ward and bed labels, are encoded into a QR code or a shareable link so the receiving person can load them. This data is encoded, not encrypted, and travels only to whoever you show the code to or send the link to. Private bed notes are never included in a handover.

Because a shared link can be read by anyone who receives it, please show the QR code in person where possible, and keep job text to non-identifying clinical shorthand (see below).

Do not enter patient-identifiable information

Handover is a task list, not a patient record. Use non-identifying shorthand only. Do not enter patient names, initials, dates of birth, hospital numbers or anything else that could identify a patient. The app is intended for use by healthcare professionals and is a decision-support aid; it does not replace verbal handover or clinical responsibility.

Camera

The app asks for camera access only so you can scan a colleague's handover QR code. The camera image is processed on your device to read the code and is never stored, uploaded or shared. You can decline camera access and paste a handover link instead.

Local notifications

If you allow notifications, the app can remind you on your device when a job is due. These are standard on-device (local) notifications scheduled from your job list on iOS and Android. The reminder text stays on your device, nothing is sent to us or to any server, and you can turn notifications off at any time in system Settings. Reminders still appear inside the app even if notifications are disabled.

Keeping, and deleting, your data

Your data stays on your device until you remove it. You are always in control and can delete it at any time by:

Children

The app is intended for healthcare professionals and is not directed at children.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights to access, correct and erase your personal data. Because your data is held only on your own device and we never receive it, you can exercise these rights directly at any time using the app and your device settings. If you have a concern you can contact us at khalid@drshamiyah.com, and you have the right to complain to the UK's supervisory authority, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "last updated" date above will change and the new version will be published here.
